Original oil on deep edge canvas 125cm x 76cm
Sometimes a painting takes on a life of its own.
One afternoon, while swimming in the clear green waters of the Soldiers Pool at the southern end of Nobbys Beach, I was joined by a friend’s daughter, Elsie, who happily agreed to be my mermaid muse and let me photograph her.
She was such a graceful model that I fully intended to name the piece after her.
But as the painting progressed, my attention was drawn instead to the rainbows of light dancing on her arms and legs — like henna tattoos made of sunlight.
And so, the very ethereal Elsie became Henna of Light.
