Evocative artworks capturing the beauty of light, water and atmosphere.
My work is deeply inspired by my connection to the natural world. Water and light are enduring motifs in my practise, reflecting my reverence for the ocean, and the way light transforms landscapes.

I’m a full time artist based in Newcastle and Lake Macquarie, working in oil and pastel to explore the dynamic movement of water, the ever-changing light of coastal environments, and the deep sense of memory and place these landscapes evoke.

Framed original oil on linen 53cm x 53cm. Ready to hang in a handmade float frame of Tasmanian oak timber. Tasmanian oak comes from sustainable and environmentally responsible sources and is FSC and PEFC certified.
This painting was inspired by the crystal clear, cold waters of the Bermagui Blue Pool. Part of the Ocean Gems series, a collection that drifts between realism and abstraction.
An exploration into the transparent qualities of water, and the way that the ocean floor, water and light when combined can sometimes resemble gemstones sparkling in the sunlight.
Although each piece in the series is inspired by a different body of water or rock pool, there seems to be no separation between the paintings when placed together.
The fluidity of line and colour appears to have no beginning, and no end, flowing from one canvas to the next, much like water itself.

Original Oil on deep edge canvas 76cm x 76cm
At low tide if you round the corner at the northern end of Bar Beach you can follow the coast and walk to Susan Gilmore Beach.
One afternoon I set up my easel and did a small painting on site. The late afternoon light was spilling over the headland illuminating the salt spray, creating a golden mist that filled the air.
The out going tide had left shallow pools of water in light and shadow. The whole scene was so beautiful. Back home in the studio I used the small painting as a reference for this much bigger version.

This painting was inspired by the Soldiers Pool at the southern end of Nobby’s Beach where light dances across the sandy ocean floor. Part of the Ocean Gems series, a collection that drifts between realism and abstraction.

On a hot December morning I went to the Newcastle Ocean Baths, not for a swim unfortunately but to do some sketches for an upcoming commission.
Even on the coast there was no breeze and no swell, the ocean had a flat oily sheen to it. The baths had been cleaned the day before and you might say conditions were perfect.
This painting was inspired by that brief visit, a lone swimmer captured mid stroke and the lifeguard and a friend deep in conversation, the whole scene bathed in the beautiful morning light.

Summer heat, blue skies, cool swims in the green ocean at Merewether Ocean Baths. Just dive in!
A scene that is split in half over two paintings is known as a Diptych. An old idea but one I hadn’t tried until now. Water Views 9 and Water Views 8 look great hanging together but could easily hang alone.

Original Oil on Cradle Board 90cm x 60cm
The inspiration for this painting came on a hot January day.
The tide was way out, the water so clear and inviting and the rocks that are usually submerged at high tide, were exposed.
This creates a chain of shallow turquoise pools that are the perfect place to cool off, snorkel and explore. Another classic summer day at beautiful Bar Beach.

Framed original oil on canvas 83cm x 103cm. Ready to hang in a timber lime washed float frame.
Inspired by an early morning swim at Wylie's Baths in Coogee, where the water was clear, the sunlight was the hot bright February kind and the natural rock bottom all combined to create many weird and beautiful distortions.
Interesting things can happen to light waves as they pass through water, behaving much like a glass prism, splitting them into their full spectrum of colours.
Like a mythical shape shifter fleetingly glimpsed before changing form.

If you walk down a winding little bush track at the southern end of Dudley Beach, in the Glenrock Conservation Area, you will find this beautiful place.
So close to the city of Newcastle but if feels like a world away.
Known as the Dudley Blow Hole, where the constant forces of water and nature have carved out a narrow channel in the rock shelf.
Here you can take a walk along the rocks or sand, often without another person in sight. Just the sound of the gulls, the waves and the ocean breeze for company.
This painting won First Prize in the 2026 Lola Rose Exhibition held by the Newcastle and Lake Macquarie Art Society.

Newcastle's fleet of busy tugboats have so much character and are the true work horses of the Hunter River.
Dwarfed by the huge container ships they guide into port, watching them doing their job always evokes a mix of admiration and awe.
This one is heading back to dock after seeing yet another ship safely into harbour. All in a day’s work for these little boats.

The busy working Port of Newcastle is home to a fleet of very busy tugboats.
These little work horses of the river are responsible for the safe passage of every container ship that visits the harbour. A big responsibility!
This one was slowly making its way out to sea late in the day. A storm had just passed over as the last rays of the setting sun created a spotlight effect causing everything to glow.
The yellows of the tug contrasted so beautifully against the silvery mauves and greys of the river and sky, and I knew I had to capture it in paint.

Late afternoon at the beach has always been a favourite time to walk and farewell the day.
Merewether beach with its beautiful long flat rock shelf is a home to multi coloured weed, sea life and rock pools that reflect the sky.
This painting was inspired by afternoon walks and painting studies done from the walkway.
At this time of day things seem to glow and long shadows spread their fingers across the sand and rocks, creating all kinds of interesting effects.
Original paintings and limited edition prints are also available from Make Space Gallery, corner of Watt and Scott Streets, Newcastle East. Open Thursday to Sunday 10 - 3.

Belinda has an exceptional talent for capturing the beauty of the ocean. The painting I have of the Merewether Ocean Baths is a daily reminder of wonderful afternoons and gorgeous summer swims there with my dad when I was a child.

The painting’s rich colours and joyful energy brighten our home and lift my mood, perfectly capturing the ocean’s light and movement. I love the view through the twisted watery lens, it reminds me of how much I enjoy my ocean swims.

The painting had an immediate emotional impact on me. Belinda has captured the refreshing joy and coolness of being in the water, evoking memories of wading in the sunshine with my children. It delights me from its place on my wall every time I see it.
