Rust never sleeps...
The beaches around the mining village of Catherine Hill Bay were a regular haunt of mine when I was in my late teens. My friends surfed while I swam, walked and explored rock pools.
Back then it was a very quiet little town and we often slept in our cars, I’d watch the sun came up over the horizon, as my surfing buddies paddled out in the first light of dawn.
Over the hill from the pub, which is now a housing estate, was stunted bushland that hugged the hill with a meandering dirt track down to Moonee and the long walk to Ghosties Beach...for more waves of course.
Throughout all this time the old jetty stood quietly rusting. This painting captures just one afternoon, the sun low and the reflections long. So many interesting angles, while the colours and shadows change depending on the time of day, and the sea and the rust never sleep.
Original oil 102cm x 102cm on deep edge canvas. Image wraps around the edges of the canvas.
