At the southern end of Nobbys Beach below historic Fort Scratchley there's a ring of rocks that were placed there in the late 19th century by the Newcastle Borough Council.
The placement of these large rocks created a seawall, defining an oval pool which was once considered to be one of the best ocean pools and swimming spots in Newcastle.
Once known as Fortification Baths, it became known as the Soldiers Baths after the men stationed at Fort Scratchley, who would swim there.
In 1909 a cliff overhanging the baths collapsed and soldiers bathing there at the time were lucky to survive.
Today at high tide it's still a great place to snorkel and swim.
This painting was inspired by a bright day in summer, the sun shining, the water clear and inviting while people of all ages enjoy a day at the beach and a swim in the sheltered waters of the Soldiers Pool.
